This map was inspired by the NFL game on November 17th between the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders. The pirates of the Caribbean are still around, but you’re more likely to see pirates in the oil tanker filled waters of the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Guinea or the seas of Southeast Asia. These pirate raid hotspots are congested with ships transporting goods across the world. Meanwhile, dolphins swim in abundance along more peaceful shores.
Data for this map comes from dolphin observations on iNaturalist.org and Anti-Shipping Activity Messages (ASAM) logged as part of Maritime Safety Information by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
