Unsurprisingly, Nevada is in the top 10 most sinful states, but it is not number one! That crown belongs to South Carolina.
This analysis used popular brands as a proxy for each of the seven deadly sins:
- Waffle House: Wrath
- Golden Corral: Gluttony
- Wells Fargo: Greed
- Apple: Envy
- Walmart: Sloth
- Sephora: Pride
- Hooters: Lust
To assess the sinfulness of each state, I tabulated the number of locations for each brand using data from AllThePlaces.xyz and OpenStreetMap and normalized it by each state’s population. After that, I compared each state to the national average to calculate a score for each sin. Finally, I summed the score for each sin to determine the most sinful states.
